August 15, 2025 – Kenny Bevans: IN foodplots going in
It’s August 15th and I’m down at my Indiana property getting ready to put in my fall food plots with Evolved seed. Things are a little grown up since I last mowed—my truck’s been in the shop after an accident for about a month, but thankfully I had left my tractor at my buddy Steve’s place. He let me use his rotary tiller, which was a lifesaver.
I’ve got three plots (maybe four) to get in today. The first is the biggest, located right under a big powerline where I’ll be running both a Redneck Ghillie Blind and a Novix stand. After getting it all tilled down, I planted Evolved 7-Card Stud.
On to plot number two—a small quarter-acre tucked at the end of my soybeans. Another Novix stand overlooks this one, and I also have a Redneck blind nearby. For this plot I put in Evolved 5-Card Draw and top-dressed with Radishes and Purple Top Turnips before lightly tilling it in.
Plot three was across the creek, a bit more secluded. It’s a killer little setup that I intentionally left somewhat grown up—deer love that edge of cover. I got it rotary tilled, planted more Evolved 5-Card Draw, and top-dressed again with Rackom Radishes. Between the natural cover and that Novix stand tucked in, this one should be deadly.
By then, the bugs and heat were wearing me down, but I debated a fourth plot. On August 17th, I made it back with Steve to get it done. We cleared out a hidden bottom plot right below the first one and planted a mix of 7-Card Stud, 5-Card Draw, and Rackom Radishes just before a rain. This spot has a natural travel lane and I’ve seen deer here plenty—it’s finally ready to produce.
It’s always work getting food in the ground, but it’s worth it. Now it’s time to pray for rain and start thinking about those early season setups.
