July 11, 2025 — Ben Rising: Update on the Corn
Hey guys, Ben here from Whitetail Edge.
Javin and I are out checking one of our corn plots, and I’ve gotta say—it’s looking great. Just last week, I came through and sprayed it using my four-wheeler with a mix of glyphosate and DeerGro’s Nitro Grow. Corn absolutely thrives on nitrogen, so it’s a win-win: I knocked out the weeds and gave the corn a shot of what it loves most—all in one pass.
This particular plot started off as bare grass. No tilling, just sprayed it with PlotStart, and then drilled straight into it using a Nico drill by Kasco. That drill isn’t really built for corn specifically—it’s more of a grain drill—but it worked. It gives me three rows of corn per pass, though the row spacing is wider than I’d like.
We ran corn in this same spot last year and it turned out awesome. But corn’s a nitrogen hog—it’ll suck your soil dry—so I’ll be doing some follow-up fertilizing and definitely a soil test.
I’ve been thinking ahead to next year: with the wide row spacing from the drill, why not fill in those gaps with beans? Could be a killer combo—corn rows with standing beans in between. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve seen it done. If you have any experience with this method, I’d love to hear how it worked out—drop a comment on the video and share what you learned.
Thanks for tagging along. Wishing you all a great summer and hopefully the best deer season of your life!
